The mechanism
Because payouts are divided from a shared pool, artificial streams take money from every other rights holder on the service rather than creating new money. Detection is therefore a platform priority, and enforcement now commonly includes withheld royalties, removal of the affected release, per-track penalties charged by distributors, and account termination.
A worked example
What it is confused with
- Playlist placement Editorial pitching and legitimate playlist promotion are ordinary marketing. Purchased placement on playlists that deliver artificial plays is the same activity as buying streams, and is treated as fraud regardless of how it is sold.
Why it matters
The artist is held responsible for streams they may not have knowingly bought, and 'a promoter did it' is not usually a defence that restores the withheld income.
